SHILLONG, OCT 17: A special camp for identification and assessment of persons with intellectual disabilities was held at Ampati Mother’s Union SSA School in South West Garo Hills on Tuesday.
The Camp was organized by the District Unit, SSA in collaboration with the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID), Secunderabad.
The camp aimed at identifying persons with intellectual disabilities and assessing the extent of the disability so as to grant them teaching learning materials (TLM) provided free of cost by the government.
Addressing the gathering Dr Amrita Sahai, Assistant Professor Rehabilitative Psychology i/c Delhi Regional Centre stated that the camp was being held to identify and asses persons with intellectual disabilities so that the NIEPID could recommend the government to provide aids and appliances (educational materials) to the afflicted. She stated that the TLMs cost more than Rs 8,000 per unit and so it was important to properly assess the extent of the disability.
The team from NIEPID comprised of R C Nitnawara, Phisiotherapist, Kolkatta Regional Centre, Sreenivasadu, Lecturer, Vocational counseling and employment, Secundarabad, T Vikash, Administrator and Dr. Amrita Sahai, Assistant Professor Rehabilitative Psychology i/c Delhi Regional Centre.
Among others who attended the camp were Extra Assistant Commissioner and District Mission Coordinator, Dimse A Sangma nad District Social Welfare Officer, Linda J Sangma.
