Shillong, Nov 19: The Achik National Volunteer Council – B expressed concern over the circulation of fake currencies in Garo hills and felt that if not controlled will greatly affect the region’s economy..
“The rise in circulation of fake currencies is a major concern as Garo hills is being exploited economically,” ANVC-B said in a statement issued Monday.
According to the outfit, fake currency amounting not less than crores of rupees have made its way into Garo Hill in the past few weeks.
Saying it will surely affect the economy of the people, the outfit said that the main area of concern are the coal belts of Garo Hills as payments made every week to the suppliers includes not less than thousands which are slipped in between cash adding . It said, “Simple and ignorant people fails to differentiate the real from fake.”
With election coming near, the ANVC(B) warned people that fake notes will surely make its way into the field even as it appeal not to encourage distribution of money in the upcoming election.
The outfit suggested to the coal traders to transact cash through banks, as it is the only way to detect the fake notes. It, however, said, “If this is not checked now, we are sure to find Garo hills rolling back in time. We urge upon the people to be self conscious and observant.”
The ANVC-B also called on the Nokmas to cancel agreements with companies from outside who are doing business in Garo hills without consent of the concerned authorities.- By Our Reporter
