SHILLONG, SEPT 11: Five persons died while 10 others were critically injured after an overloaded auto rickshaw they were travelling hit an electric post at a village in West Garo Hills District on Monday morning.
The victims are passengers from Mankachar, Assam and are travelling to Tura on the auto rickshaw.
The tragedy could have been worse had it not been for the prompt response of the SDRF and Homeguards personnel who were nearby the accident site and rushed to the spot, tending to the injured while also despatching the severely injured to Tura Civil Hospital.
According to Peniwel T Sangma, District Home Guards Commandant, West Garo Hills District, the accident occurred close to Tura Home Guards Compounds at around 10:45 am when the auto rickshaw bearing registration no. ML08C9872 travelling downwards on a slope hit an electric post and turned turtle a couple of times before coming to rest at a concrete wall on the roadside.
He said that when the accident occurred, the SDRF and Homeguards personnel were engaged in cleaning the compound of their office.
Immediately, the SDRF and Homeguards personnel rushed to help the ill fated auto rickshaw and its occupants.
While two passengers, one woman and a man were killed on the spot, thirteen others were rushed to the Hospital by the SDRF personnel in their rescue van.
Sangma stated that out of thirteen victims who were rushed to the hospital, three consisting of two women and one boy succumbed to their injuries on the hospital.
Ten injured passengers are presently receiving medical treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.
A total of 15 passengers were inside the auto rickshaw which was clearly overloaded. There were three men and eight women, while four of them were minors- two boys and two girls.
