SHILLONG, SEPT 6: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has assured that the state government would soon set up a community college in Ri Bhoi to cater to the educational needs of the students from the region.
The assurance was given to a delegation of the Ri Bhoi Students’ Union (RBSU) which met him today to discuss on the long pending demand of the union for setting up of a government college in the district.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, union president EJ Nongpluh said, “He (CM) has assured the delegation that instead of a government college, the government would set up a community college for the district.”
He said that the community college would either be set up at Umroi or Nongpoh, the district headquarter of Ri Bhoi, but the matter would be finalized based on the convenience of the students only after a survey to be soon conducted by the education department.
Asked, Nongpluh said that the union expressed its satisfaction on the assurance given by the chief minister since it would be a great blessing for the students of the region, especially those who could not afford to continue with their further studies in the state capital.
On the difference between a government college and a community college, he however said that unlike the government college, the community college would ensure that a teacher once posted in the institute will not be transferred to other places till his/her retirement.
With regards to the demand for setting up of a polytechnic in the district, he said that the chief minister has assured that the matter is being taken up to ensure the process is speed up.
Meanwhile, the RBSU also urged the state government to declare the Umsning Jagi Road which is connecting the state with upper Assam as a new national highway.
