‘Will follow rules’

SHILLONG, JULY 3: Chief Secretary Y Tsering today said that the government will follow as per rules and regulation when it comes to appointment of officials in any capacity.

This came as a reaction following the ongoing strike staged by the Meghalaya Transports Corporation (MTC) workers for the past one week, demanding to reinstate Adalyne Nikhli as Managing Director(MD) of the Corporation.

Nikhla was relieved by the State government as an MD of the Corporation earlier this week and Mr. PM Sangma was assigned in her place.

The Chief Secretary who did not want to talk more on this matter, only said, “The government has its own procedures”.

The functioning of MTC has come to standstill after workers under the banner of Meghalaya Transports Corporation Workers Union (MTCWU) resorted to an indefinite strike since last week topressurise the state government to reverse back its earlier decision of removing Ms Nikhla as MD.

Talking to media persons here on Monday, President of MTCWU K Rumnong said that the agitation will continue until the government gives its befitting response as per the demand of the union.

He however said that school buses were exempted from strike as it will affect students.

According to Rumnong, the Corporation has been regaining its strength from its sickness under the leadership of Ms Nikhla as MD even for the short span of her tenure of nine months only.

“We want her to stay as MD, the Corporation is gradually gaining its strength from weakness especially in financial matters under the guidance of her”, he said.
