NPP to give “sleepless night” to Congress in 2013 elections

Shillong, Nov 12: Newly formed National People’s Party (NPP) led by Purno A Sangma said that the party’s strategy is to give “sleepless nights” to Congress in the upcoming state elections in 2013 even as it has decided to support independent candidates from the two constituencies in Jaintia hills district having two sitting Congress MLAs.

“We have decided to support two independent candidates from the two constituencies – Jowai and Amlarem in Jaintia hills district,” NPP president WR Kharlukhi told reporters Saturday after the party’s meeting.

The party will no longer set up its candidates from the  two constituencies.

The decision was taken after the two JHADC MDCs Moonlight Pariat and Stephen Mukhim who will be contesting as independent candidates from Jowai constituency and Amlarem constituency sought the support of the NPP in the ensuing elections.

Moonlight Pariat will be contesting against sitting Congress MLA RC Laloo from Jowai Constituency while Stephan Mukhim would be contesting against sitting MLA Lahkmen Rymbui.

“The decision to support the two candidates is from the political point of view,” Kharlukhi said adding “Directions have been given to the party’s units from both constituencies to work hard for the two candidates.

When question wasn’t it futile for the party to extent support to such candidates, Kharlukhi said, “I don’t know about the future. But I have confident that they will not ditch the party since they are ready to join the party as associate members.”

Saying that it is necessary to have strategies in politics Kharlukhi, however, refuse to divulge any further saying the decision to support these two candidates is the strategy  the party is adopting and is confident that it will not fail.

Saying that the NPP will defeat Congress in the coming election, Kharlukhi said, “Congress will get a good beating this time and there is no doubt that next year, a non-congress government would be formed.” He said the Congress is confused at present and this is the reason why it has failed to decide on its candidates till today.

Kharlukhi said, “We have already started our campaign and Congress is yet to come up with the list of its candidates due factionalism, pulls and pressures.”

NPP is proposing for a pre-poll alliance with other political parties including the UDP, the main ally in the present Congress led coalition government, as a step to tie up for forming the next government.

The NPP has announced more than 30 candidates to contest the upcoming elections scheduled in February – March next year.- By Our Reporter
