SHILLONG, MAY 24: Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit today inaugurated the Solar Street Lights Project at Kongthong village under Khadarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block, East Khasi Hills District.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said Meghalaya with its picturesque waterfalls and landscape, beautiful nature and pleasant climate can attract tourists to visit the State. The Governor lauded the people of the State for upholding their unique culture, honesty, simplicity and hard working nature. He also urged the people of the areas to preserve the environment and carried forward the rich cultural heritage.
It may be mentioned that the solar street lighting project at Kongthong village was funded by the Governor’s Secretariat and implemented by the State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD), Government of Meghalaya as part of its initiative to promote appropriate rural technology in rural areas to enhance livelihood. The solar LED street lighting is a stand- alone system that works automatically from dust to dawn and the total cost of installation of 20 solar street lights is Rs.4.5 lakhs.
The programme was also attended by K. N. Kumar, Principal Secretary to the Governor, E. Warjri, BDO, Khadarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block, N. Hajong, EAC, B. S. Rummnong, Deputy Director, SIRD, K. Majaw, Sordar, Raid Kongthong, Swami Ekarthananda, Chief Warden, Ramakrishna Mission, Students’ Home, Sohra and villagers from Khatarshnong areas.
