Kropha convicted in coal scam

SHILLONG, MAY 19: Meghalaya chief secretary KS Kropha is among the three former bureaucrats of Ministry of Coal convicted in an alleged coal scam case by a special CBI court on Friday.

Kropha, was the former Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Coal. The two others who were convicted include former Coal Secretary HC Gupta and KC Samria, who was a director in-charge of coal allocation.

The case was related to the allocation of a coal mining block in Madhya Pradesh to a private company.

However, the fate of the incumbent chief secretary is yet to be known whether he would continue office following the CBI court’s decision, which has also come at a time when the chief minister Mukul Sangma is presently on a foreign trip.

A senior government official however informed that nothing official on the matter has reached the state government.

In view of this, the government would wait for the official pronouncement of the Court, the senior official added.

When reporters approached the additional chief secretary Y Tsering, he refused to make any comment on the matter by saying – “I am not ready for any interview. I am busy.”

Sources informed that Kropha was attending the two-day camp sitting/open hearing conducted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) which concluded on Thursday in Guwahati.
