High acid affects Myntdu

SHILLONG, MAY 2: The Chief Executive Officer of  Jowai Municipal Board informed all concerned that the  NGT have found the seriousness of the health of Myntdu River, that the river have turn blue because of high acid content as per report prepared by Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board.

The river being degraded by human intervention has reduced in size on account of heavy siltation, it was also reported that people indulges in open defecation as a result of which the faecal coliform and total coliform counts are very high and the BOD level is beyond the permissible limit, illegal stone and sand mining being carried on in and around the disposal of untreated wastes and water sewage of acidic contents of coal piled up on the river.

 

Therefore in compliance to the  NGT order dated 27th February, 2017, the Municipal Board has requested all inhabitants of Jowai town to construct septic tank, sanitary latrine in their respective houses and campus and to stop open defecation and direct discharge of effluent to drains, streams and water bodies.

 

The CEO has also informed the public that no piggery, hatchery, poultry unit, farming are allowed to be established or set up near the Myntdu river bank and all the existing lying on both side of the river are requested to stop operation with immediate effect.

 

Any violation may attract penalty as per law.
