SHILLONG, APR 12: Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) chairman Vinay Kumar Saxena today observed that the Khadi activity in Meghalaya is not up to the mark even as he announced setting up of 7-8 Khadi institutes in the state.
“The khadi activity is very less and not up to the mark in the state,” Saxena, who is on a two-day visit to the state, told reporters here on Wednesday.
He said looking from the records, it was seen that much attention was not given to Khadi for the past 20 years despite its potential to generate employment among the people of the state.
However stating that around 7-8 Khadi institutes will be set up during this year, Saxena said the cost of each institute is at Rs 9 lakh and its production annually is around Rs 16-17 lakh besides giving direct employment to tribal people.
Meanwhile, the KVIC chairman also announced the launch of honey mission and sanctioning of 5000 bee boxes for Meghalaya, which accordingly to him, has a lot of potential in bee-keeping.
“A total of 5000 bee boxes will be given for the state during this year. We will select and identify people and give employment to them through this activity,” he said.
Emphasizing the need to increase khadi activities in the state, Saxena said that this is because Khadi has the power to create employment right at the doorstep of a person.
He also informed that the KVIC has distributed 20 electric potter machines to reduce the burden of tradition pottery which will not only increase production but also bring quality into the business.
Asked, the KVIC chairman said that employment was provided to around 7000 people under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in the state besides sanctioning of 965 units.
He added around 4.37 lakh employment was generated in the entire the country and the KVIC was able to give the highest subsidy of Rs 12.81 crore.
