SHILLONG, APR 8: Three youths from Meghalaya are all set to be part of the team representing India in the upcoming WAKO Asia Kickboxing Championship, which will be held at Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan from April 24 – 30.

Pynshai Mawrie, Lamphrang Kharsahnoh and Pynnehbor Mylliemngap from the Meghalaya Association of Kickboxing Organizations (MAKO) have been selected during a selection trial held recently in Pune.

The WAKO Indian Team will be competing against 25 teams from across the globe in the mega kickboxing event.

Addressing reporters here on Saturday, MAKO president Donny Ranee however lamented on the reports alleging that the boys got selected when they have never participated in the state level championships.

Refuting this, he said that two of them including Pynneh had earlier won medals in the Asian Jeet Kune – Do Championships 2016 held in Kandy, Sri Lanka on October 15 and 16, last year.

Stating that tour is a self sponsored one since it was beyond the reach of the WAKO India, Ranee said that getting sponsorship was a major challenge for young talents from the state to be able to participate in such big events.

He also recalled that during the preparation for the championship in Sri Lanka the boys were about to missed the opportunity but thanks to some of the public representatives who extended their help at the right time.

Informing that the expenditure for each player would be around Rs 1 lakh, Ranee appealed to the state government and well wishers to lend financial support to the boys.

NCP MDC from Laban Ricky Shullai, who was also accompanying the MAKO members, said that he is extending all the possible help from his end to get sponsorship for the boys.

He informed that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has  also agreed to extend some financial support to the three kickboxing players.
