SHILLONG, MAR 9: The Meghalaya government today informed that investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a woman in the outskirts of the city was being given “top priority”.
Giving the assurance through a suo motu statement in the Assembly, home minister HDR Lyngdoh said, “Police are actively pursuing the available leads and the case is being treated as a special report case which implies that it will be given top priority in investigation.”
It may be mentioned that on March 7, the half-naked body of Jenisha Jyrwa (30) was found near Ishyrwat junction on the road to Nongmynsong.
As per the inquest report, no significant fatal injury marks were found on the corpse except for abrasion marks on lower limb.
Lyngdoh said that the cadaver was sent for post mortem to NEIGRIHMS as a special case. He said the SP (City) had requested the institute to expedite the report to ascertain the cause of death.
Stating that a suo motu case has been registered under Rynjah Police Station, he said, “All-out efforts are being made to ascertain the persons who would have been with her on the intervening night on March 6-7.”
He also assured that the police would investigate the case professionally and with due diligence.
Pending investigations, the home minister appealed to citizens to extend help to the police in preventing crimes against women and children and to come forward to provide information in such cases.
