SHILLONG, MAR 6: The Meghalaya government today assured the state Assembly that action would be initiated on the alleged illegal businesses at the Balat border haat in East Khasi Hills.
Replying to a call attention moved by Opposition Leader Donkupar Roy on the second day of the budget session, Sangma informed the House that based on a complaint filed by an RTI activist, the deputy commissioner has ordered an inquiry by a magistrate on the matter.
“On receiving of the report, necessary action will be taken as it is a matter of concern as we have taken pride as a state which is pioneering for resumption of border haats,” Sangma said.
Roy had expressed concern over the alleged benami practices because as per the complaint, maximum of the vendors in the border haat are non-tribals.
Meanwhile Sangma informed that based on the bilateral engagement, there is scope for establishing more border haats along the Indo-Bangla border.
According to him, out of 22 new border haats proposed to the Centre, four were agreed to be sanctioned.
“We are following this up with the Government of India to facilitate the commissioning of the new border haats,” he added.
