SHILLONG, FEB 8: East Khasi hills police on Wednesday has warned the public not to fall prey to frauds who calls up over phone offering to sell gold for a less than market rate and duped many people.
The police warning comes after one person from Mawngap had fallen victim to such a caller when he went all the way to Tezpur, Assam to make a payment of Rs 7 lakh for gold bars, only to realize later that the same was bronze and coated with golden colour.
“A case has been registered in Laban Police Station for cheating and investigation is on to identify and arrest the culprits,” SP (City) Vivek Syiem said.
Alerting the public to be cautious and not to fall prey to such callers, Syiem informed several complains have been received by police of unscrupulous persons who call up over phone offering to sell gold for a less than market rate citing that the gold has been accidently unearthed while digging up a construction site.
“The callers always insist on the intending buyers to come to Assam (Upper Assam) to make the payment,” he said while ruing that despite several advisories people from this district are still falling prey to such calls and are lured to make payments only to be duped.
