SHILLONG, DEC 27: Meghalaya clinched the bid for hosting the prestigious 2022 national games in the state overshadowing four other bidders Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgargh and Uttarakhand. Meghalaya had also pledged Rs 5 crore as the bid amount for the game.
The confirmation for hosting the national games in 2022 came on Tuesday after the annual general meeting of the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) held at Chennai. The meeting accepted Meghalaya’s bid to host the prestigious games which will coincide with the state 50 years of statehood.
Speaking over phone from Chennai airport, Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) president John F Kharshïing lauded the state government’s efforts in pursuing the state’s bid.
Kharshiing along with MSOA secretary general Chiranjeev Choudhury had also made a short presentation at Tuesday’s IOA meeting to buttress Meghalaya’s bid for the game.
Kharshiing said what went in favour of the state was its successful conduct of the 12th South Asian Games and other national and international meets which were appreciated by the IOA officials.
“The IOC, therefore, felt fit to allot the 2022 edition of the national games to us,” Kharshïing said adding that now other formalities will follow including formal allotment of the games to the hill state, budgetary allocations etc.
