TURA, DEC 8: A plot to assassinate South Garo hills SP Anand Misra was uncovered with the arrest of two suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre on Thursday from Baghmara town.
The plot to kill Mishra was unraveled after police investigated threatening SMSs received by the SP since Oct 20 in his personal and as well as office cell phone numbers.
The two arrested cadres of the outfit have been identified as Boresh Sangma (38, of Bul Awe in Baghmara and Rankhu Momin (49 of Bolsal Ading in Baghmara.
The two were said to be keeping a tab on Misra and even claimed they would soon attack his residence. Sources said the duo were supposed to shoot and kill him. They sent abusive messages often using discriminatory language as well,” police sources said.
It is learnt the duo even demanded an amount of Rs 50 lakhs failing which they would shoot the SP down.
“They were using only one number and this was being used exclusively for the purpose of threatening. It was a ‘blind’ case to crack but thankfully the IT team managed to tackle it,” Mishra said when contacted.
Misra, however, felt the duo were likely to be over ground workers of the GNLA. “They have identified a few names who we believe were behind the entire episode. A full report and further arrests would be based upon the inquiry. The arrested persons have admitted to their guilt and named more people involved,” added Mishra.
The mobile phone and SIM card used to threaten the SP have been recovered from the possession of the duo.
