Partial response to Tura shut down call

TURA, OCT 19: Responding to the call of the district administration, traders of Tura town today opened their shops.

A conglomeration of civil organisations including Garo Students Union (GSU) had requested the traders to keep their shops closed from 5 am to 5 pm as a mark of condolence for the death of a youth, injured in a clash at a locality here.

On October 13, three youths were allegedly beaten at Risipara, of which one succumbed to the injuries on October 15.

Police have arrested eight people in this connection.

All shops including Tura Super Market remained opened through the day. Several shops in the markets of Chandmari, Ringrey, Hawakhana, Araimile and Dakopgre remained closed for most part of the day, with few opening at intervals.

“We have video recorded the markets. We will review the matter on the closure of few shops with the police tomorrow and initiate necessary steps”, said Pravin Bakshi, deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills.

The district administration has issued directive to traders to keep their shops and establishments’ open and warned action would be taken as per the directive of High Court, which prohibits any form of bandh in Meghalaya.

Security was beefed up in Tura and its adjoining areas to ensure that the day passes peacefully. The closure call of shops did not affect normal life in the town with schools, colleges, government offices and banks remaining open.-From Our Correspondent
