country attained its independence during the cultural exchange programme held at the BSF school premises in Shillong.

The Bangla teachers and students also expressed their gratitude to India for its role in helping Bangladesh attains its independence.

The BGB school students ended their performance by displaying the Bangladesh national flag on stage.

Adding fervour to the programme which aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two countries, a senior teacher of the BGB School Nahima Sultana also performed a breathtaking classical dance to a song of a Bollywood movie – ‘Nikaah’.

Earlier, BSF students set up the tempo of the programme with songs and dances, which was well appreciated by their counterpart.

“Lean on me” – a song which carries the message of better relationship in the future was also sung by the students of BSF besides ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson dance and Bengali folk dance.

Terming the event as the best ever cultural programme, Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) Lt Col Md Akhton Iqbal said, “This is a confident building measure between the two countries through the BSF and BGB.”

Iqbal, who led the 30-Bangladesh delegation which include 26 students from the different BGB schools, arrived in the state’s capital yesterday. The Bangla students  also interacted with the students of BSF Senior Secondary School, Umpling.

“Once they interact with each other, they will make friends, make relationship and in the long run, we will achieve mutual friendship and bond – this will be very helpful for both the countries,” he said.

The BGB official also said whatever they ( Banlga students)  learns, their counterparts  will also learn about Bangladesh and once they know each other will try to understand each other, that is very important,” he said.

On the other hand, BSF PRO SK Singh informed that the programme was the first of its kind in the North East region and it will continue to be held every year.

“We will also be sending a 30-delegation which will include 26 students, 2 teachers and 2 official staffs to Dhaka, Bangladesh for a similar cultural exchange programme from October 24 to 28,” he informed.

Later during in an interaction with the media, the Bangladesh students described Meghalaya as an amazing state and even commented on the people’s hospitality and friendliness.

When asked, one of the students, Ishmam Humayum said that the government here should allow students from Bangladesh to come and study in Shillong, and students from here should also pursue their study in Bangladesh.

“We want to have proper relationship and we want students from both the countries to discover both India and Bangladesh,” he said.

They also said that Bollywood songs are popular in Bangladesh and people are crazy about Cricket.

Yesterday after a warm welcome, the Bangladesh delegation was taken to Asia’s cleanest village Mawlynnong village (Sundergaon) and before that they had already made a trip to the Root bridge at Ri-wai before arriving at the Frontier Hqr BSF Umpling.
