Absence of integrated check gates in state

truckSHILLONG, SEPT 23: The state government’s failure to set up the integrated check-posts/weighbridges despite a Supreme Court order has created a lot of problems for truckers’ community in the state.

In an order passed last year, the Supreme Court had directed the state chief secretary to decide as to how many integrated check-posts are required in the state.

The order also stated that the chief secretary’s decision with regards to number of integrated check-posts required by the state shall be final.

Concern over this delay, a delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) East Jaintia hills district led by the state youth wing president E Kurkalang on Friday met the chief secretary KS Kropha to seek clarification on the matter.

“Due to this, the truck drivers and owners are facing huge problems as they have to weigh their loads in at least four weighbridges located in East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi Districts,” Kurkalang told reporters after the meeting.

The four weighbridges include – Malidor, Myndihati, 7th Mile and 13th Mile. According to the delegation, trucks carrying within the load limit and plying through the national highway have to pay money amounting from Rs 300 to Rs 500 to all the four weighbridges.

They also alleged that these weighbridges collected money from over 2000 trucks in a day but failed to issue receipts.

When asked, Kurkalang said that the chief secretary informed the delegation that the setting up of the proposed integrated check posts will take time due to the lengthy process.

The BJYM  also demanded that the state government come up with proper guidelines for collection by such weighbridges.

Kurkalang felt there is a need to regulate the collection by these weighbridges because it is impractical and unacceptable that trucks have to pay to all of them. By Our Reporter
