SHILLONG, SEPT 15: Only this year forty eight drug peddlers were arrested while 12 were arrested in 2010, 13 in 2011, 20 in 2012, 51 in 2013, 53 in 2014 and 71 in 2015. The figure shows that the number of drug peddlers in the state is gradually increasing. Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh told the Assembly on Thursday that out of this, 40 of the arrested drug dealers were acquitted and released.
Pointing that there is an increasing number of drug dealers in the state besides low conviction rate, NPP legislator James K Sangma questioned whether the department is doing enough to deal with the issue.
In his reply, Lyngdoh said that as far as the police are concerned, they are doing their best to nab the drug peddlers and take quick action on receiving such reports. He also said that steps are being taken to prevent the rise in drug users by identifying the drug peddler.-By Our Reporter
