SHILLONG, SEPT 7: Olympian boxer Shiva Thapa will grace the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Rilbong Sports & Cultural Club, one of the noted youth organisations of Meghalaya, at the All-Shillong Boxing competition slated to be held on September 14. The tournament, which is being organised in collaboration with Meghalaya Boxing Association, will be held at the Rilbong ground. The finals are billed for September 16.
Shiva Thapa, who is the only pugilist from the northeast to qualify for Rio Olympics, will formally inaugurate the tournament. He has been requested to briefly participate in a demonstration bout to serve as an inspiration for the local boxers.
In a press statement issued by the Club president Manas Chaudhuri, it stated that the calendar of events for the jubilee celebrations will also include a 10-km marathon (September 24), vibrant Dances of India (October 6), NE Junior Table Tennis tournament (date yet to be finalised) , Veterans’ badminton tournament (end-November), food festival(December 3) and a Youth Festival (December 10).
The press statement said that invitation has been extended to cricket celebrity Sourav Ganguli to inspire the youth at the Youth Festival.
The September 24 marathon has been designed to absorb a thousand runners– -men, women, and children (under-14)- — and has cash prizes, medals and certificates will be given.
The entry forms can be collected from Shillong Times MTC building, Palace Restaurant Motphran, Jyoti Pharmacy Laban, and Pappu Book stall Laitumkhrah. The last date for entry is September 20.
The Rilbong Sports &; Cultural Club is an established name in the realm of sports, culture and social service. The club is pioneer in starting 24×7 mortuary and ambulance services which have been going on for over 25 years without break.
