SHILLONG, SEPT 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday sought the state government’s intervention for exempting research scholars in Meghalaya from submitting Aadhaar card for availing different fellowships. The demand came after the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a notification making it mandatory for Ph.D scholars to submit Aadhaar number while availing Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and other fellowships.
“We have urged the state government to intervene by appealing to the centre to consider exempting the research scholars in Meghalaya,” KSU education secretary Donald V Thabah said after meeting the Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Education DP Wahlang on Tuesday.
He said recently the centre has exempted research scholars from Assam after Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal intervened.
When asked, Thabah said that the exemption sought is especially to thousands of research scholars under the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) besides others. He also informed that the union has also decided to submit a memorandum on the issue to the Union MHRD Minister Prakash Javadekar, who is likely to visit the state’s capital on September 20.
On the post-metric scholarship, the KSU leader said that the commissioner and secretary had informed that a notification granting the exemption for students from the state has already been issued recently.-By Our Reporter
