SHILLONG, AUG 17: Students under the banner North Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) on Wednesday staged a protest in front of the vice chancellor’s office demanding scrapping of the alleged anti-student policy.
According to them, the 96th Academic Council in its meeting held on June 28 earlier this year had approved the new rules proposed by the Dean Student’s Welfare (DSW) H Kayang.
The students have also demanded stepping down of the DSW if the grievances related tso hostels are not addressed within a period of two weeks.
“We demand the NEHU authority to immediately scrap the rules proposed by the DSW because they are anti-students and unreasonable in nature,” NEHUSU general secretary Brandon Lyttan told reporters.
He said the union strongly opposed the decision of the DSW to give first preference for allotment of hostel seats to fresher students.
“Almost 80 percent preference was given to the fresher’s while only 20 percent for 3rd semester students. This has affected the students a lot especially those coming from far flung areas and outside the state as over 445 students are still on the waiting list,” he said.
According to him, the union is demanding that the allotment of hostel seats must be given to 3rd semester while newly admitted students should be allowed to stay as guests in the hostels with proper authorization.
Informing that out of 23, a total of 6 hostels are closed due to ongoing renovation work, Lyttan said, “But the university authority has failed to increase the number of hostels despite introducing new departments in the campus.”
He informed that the union had urged the university to set up two additional hostels for every new department it introduces.
The students have also objected the rigid timing set for hostellers to return to their respective hostels besides banning the use of basic utility tools like nail cutters and others electrical appliances.
“We demanded change in the timing to 9 pm for UG and PG students and 10 pm for research scholars as per old rules of the university,” he said.-By Our Reporter
