TURA, AUG 16: Almost a decade later, Garo hills is slowly coming to terms with peace and saw a grandeur Independence Day celebration on Monday.
There was a record turnout of people in all venues across five districts of Garo hills. At Dikki Bandi Stadium in Tura, about 8000 people dressed in their best – old and young witness the celebration.
Monday’s celebration dubbed as the longest duration programme, which lasted for 3 hours. Health Minister A L Hek unfurled the national tri-colour and took the Rashtriya Salute before the 44 marching contingent comprising of security forces, scouts and guides, schools and colleges.
Amidst the exuberant festivity, which prevailed in the air, a high dose of cultural programme reinstated the spirit of Independence. No militant outfits had issued bandh threat this year.
“For the past several years, we have remained indoors during national celebrations. This time it is a different moment all together. There was no threat by militants and no fear in our minds. Everything seemed normal”, asserted Matsram Sangma, who attended the celebration with his wife and two young children.
Addressing the gathering, Hek underlined the government assertiveness to curb insurgency in Garo hills. “Police has gained upper hand over militants in Garo Hills through operation Hill Storm – III”.
In the past four months, 94 militants belonging to GNLA have surrendered and 70 were arrested. “The government is open to talks with any outfit which surrenders arms and agrees to abide by the Constitution of India”, he said.
Hek also gave away meritorious awards to toppers of different board examinations. Besides, appreciation awards to government employees and young achievers.
The other highlight of the day at Dikki Bandi Stadium was a friendly match played between surrendered GNLA cadres and member of disbanded UALA outfit. Hek greeted both the teams and witnessed the match, which was attended by over 5000 people.
The surrendered GNLA cadres won the match by scoring a goal.
Former UALA chairman Novembirth Marak said, “We are very happy that we have come forward and are equally treated like other citizens of this country. I would like to thank all the people and administration who have supported us in this exhibition football match”.
Philiport D Shira, a former area commander of GNLA said, “It is great opportunity given to us by the administration to come in closer contact with the society. We would be more than happy to take up sporting activities in future”.
At Chandmari, a unique live sound on the street programme was held, which also received good turnout. Young music artists performed peppy music and sizzling dance numbers. A total of three bands and several solo artists displayed their musical expertise.
In the evening a concert by Grik A’chik was put up at District Auditorium, Tura, which was equally a hit. A popular hangout joint Quick Bites also put up different activities to mark the 70th Independence Day.-From Our Correspondent
