SHILLONG, AUG 9: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) Ri Bhoi district on Tuesday threatened to block the Umsning bypass, which is still under construction, if the authorities failed to repair the deplorable Umsning existing road within two weeks.
The decision was taken after the delegation of the HANM-RBD met the state PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who informed them that the matter had already been taken up with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which however has not taken any positive steps till today.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting on Tuesday, HANM-RBD president Bryan Sohkhlet said, “We demand the authorities concerned to immediately repair the 6 kilometers Umsning existing road which was left in a dilapidated condition for several months within two weeks.”
He however said, “The movement will be compelled to close down the Umsning bypass if there are no steps being taken to address the problems faced by the people residing in at least 10 villages along the stretch of the Umsning existing road.”
When asked, Sohkhlet said that the minister informed that the state department had on several occasions took up the matter for repairing work on the existing road with the NHAI.
“According to the minister, the NHAI has failed to respond to the request of the department till today,” he said.-By Our Reporter
