SHILLONG, AUG 3: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday demanded that exemption to  local indigenous students from submitting Aadhaar card for availing the scholarship for the year 2016-17.

The demand came following an advertisement issued by the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) on August 2, which makes it mandatory for the students of the state to submit their Aadhaar along with other documents.

In a letter to deputy chief minister in-charge Education RC Laloo, KSU president Daniel Khyriem said, “The Union demands immediate action that the above mentioned advertisement be exempted for the students of the state from submitting their Aadhaar for the scholarship and thereby avoid any unnecessary complication to our students who depend on scholarship to support their educational pursuit.”

Referring to the order passed by Supreme Court last year, he said, “Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory until a final decision is reached, therefore we can term the above advertisement a violation and can also attract “contempt of court”.”

According to him, the issue of LPG connection which has also been linked to Aadhaar has also been exempted in the state of Meghalaya due to the same concerns. He recalled that the issue has been kept in abeyance by the state government after the union had raised this issue in a meeting with the Chief Minister.

The government had resolved and decided to organize awareness campaign to address the confusion and apprehension of the people in the entire state, he said. Meanwhile, the KSU will soon meet the Commissioner and Secretary in-charge Education DP Wahlang to expressed their opposition for making Aadhaar card mandatory.-By Our Reporter
