SHILLONG, JULY 18: Former state minister Hispreaching Son Shylla is back doing what he does best. In his new avatar as the Nongkrem’s United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for the upcoming district council bye-polls, he has kicked off his campaign with his famous trademark by challenging his opponent Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) for an ‘open debate’ on five of the issues.
Shylla wants to hold a debate on traditional institutions and headmen issue, Article 244 (2) which is for strengthening the district councils, encroachment by MUDA, compulsory registration of marriage Act, 2012 and MLA schemes.
Shylla has challenge the HSPDP for an open debate after the latter hurled allegations against him for raising these issues. He also attacked HSPDP supremo Ardent M Basaiawmoit who is propagating ‘Clean Politics’.
“It is better to have an open debate on these issues because our stand is not to fool them as alleged by the HSPDP,” Shylla told reporters at a news conferenceon Monday.
Shylla, who is also the adviser of the UDP Nongkrem circle, said UDP also has also proposed that the traditional heads of the constituency to take the responsibility of organizing the open debate, preferably before the bye-election.
Shylla had campaigned against the HSPDP’s demand for inclusion of Meghalaya under Article 371 which according to him will only means to abolish the district councils under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
“If they (HSPDP) want inclusion of Article 371, they should stop contesting the district council elections,” he said.
Stating that the government should do away with the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012, Shylla said, “The Act will affect the people because if they failed to register their marriage after 120 days, the penalty will to pay a fine and serve three months jail term.”
“All this while, marriage conducted by the church or religious organization are taken as final vows but with this act it will put unnecessary burden on the people,” he said.
Pointing out that marriage and divorce is also one among the provisions in the Sixth Schedule, he said, “The KHADC had introduced a bill on marriage in other forms which seeks to simplify things where people can register their marriage before the headmen. The bill is still pending with the state government.”
On the MLA scheme, Shylla accused the present Nongkrem MLA for abusing the scheme. “How can an MLA predict that he would get that much and this much number of votes from a particular polling station, which also turns out to be true,” he said while stating “It is time that people understand that when they received MLA scheme they should be free from any pre condition.”
Earlier, the HSPDP has alleged that Shylla had decided to come back to politics because of uranium mining and threatened to bring out his lies as a former Nongkrem MLA.
On this, Shylla said, “I don’t want to talk about uranium mining now. In 2004-2007 when I was KHADC CEM I could not reject the offer of the centre through UCIL to construct the 20 km Wahkaji to Mawthabah road considering the plight of the people of the area and also the then Governor MM Jacob had assured that the road is not link at all to uranium mining.”
With regards to the threat of the HSPDP to expose him and his lies, Shylla said, “It is surprising that the HSPDP which has been campaigning on clean politics to the people of the state itself is using dirty politics against others.”
Shylla said dirty politics should be avoided because they are against the interest of the people and targeted to tarnish a single leader.-By Our Reporter
