SHILLONG, JUNE 22: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday decided to direct the different Himas having jurisdiction along the inter-state border to allow local indigenous people to utilize their unused land which will prevent illegal encroachment by Assam.
In his reply to the budget discussion on Wednesday, KHADC CEM PN Syiem admitted the threats posed on the unused lands of the Himas, which are located along the disputed inter-state border with Assam.
“The council will soon intervene into this concern by urging the Himas like Jirang and Nongspung to allow local indigenous people residing along the border to utilize their unused lands,” Syiem said while assuring the house.
Earlier while participating in the discussion, MDC Victor Rani urged KHADC to intervene into matter. “It is a concern that these lands which are not utilized may be vulnerable of being encroached by the Assam,” he said.
Rani said that he had earlier proposed to the Hima of Jirang and Nongspung to allow local people to utilize these lands which in a way will help to prevent Assam from encroaching into their jurisdictions.-By Our Reporter
