SHILLONG, JUNE 21: Four persons including a woman were arrested on Monday from Pillangkata village, in Ri Bhoi district for their involvement in a cheating racket, SP (City) Vivek Syiem told reporters on Tuesday.
The cheating racket involving payment of hard cash for converting paper into currency notes by using a certain chemical.
The accused have been identified as Nirbhay Rabha (30), Samsul Ali (26), residents of Boko Assam, Jefferson Lakiang (36) and Shiela Marbaniang (58), both hailing from Shillong.
“The accused arrested have admitted to the fact that 4 persons from Nongstoin, Nongpoh, Tinsukia and Arunachal have been cheated so far but no FIR has been received yet,” Syiem said.
He also informed that a case has been registered and investigation is on to investigate the extent of the crime and to arrest others involved.
During preliminary investigation, it has revealed that the modus operandi of the crime is that the woman Shiela Marbaniang will find customers or prospective buyers who are willing to buy double the amount of converted for half the amount of real cash, using a certain chemical.
The demonstration are held somewhere in Ri-Bhoi district where genuine cash coated with Iodide solution and appearing to be black is used to coat the cash.
The cash is then washed with Sodium Thiosulphate also called Hypo solution which is used in developing negative photographs.
“This is to make the buyer believe that the chemical is actually converting black paper into cash, another day is then fixed for buying the solution where the buyer is called to come to a place near the Guwahati Airport,” Syiem said adding “Once the cash is paid for the solution, delivered in a bottle, someone who is nearby comes in a bike and hits the bottle whereby all the solution goes wasted.”
He said the buyers thereby have no means to demand money back from the persons in Meghalaya.
The seized Items includes 1 green laminated paper where solutions is to be applied for demo, Greenish-blue liquid Sodium Thiosulphate solution contained in a bottle, 17 bundles of iodide each containing 300 pieces of paper coated with iodide solution in the shape & size of a Rs. 500/- note, 12 Nos of Rs 500 real currency notes coated with Iodide solution which was placed above the 17 bundles, 8 mobile phones of the accused, 1 black colour Mahindra XUV bearing registration no. AS-01-BR-0027 and 1 silver colour Wagon R VXI bearing registration no. AS-01-BP-8346.-By Our Reporter
