‘Ban smoking in Iewduh’

SHILLONG, JUNE 21: Opposition Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Tuesday demanded that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) ban ‘smoking’ in Iewduh, which is one of the oldest traditional markets in the state. Moving a motion during the ongoing session on Tuesday, former KHADC chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew said that not only she received several complaints from market goers against unrestricted smoking but she is also a victim herself.

Lamenting at the ineffective implementation of the existing prohibition of smoking rules, 2008, she said as per the World Health Organization (WHO), over 9 lakh people died annually due to smoking of tobacco.

“Passive smoking is even bad and I urged the EC to direct the Hima Mylliem to ban smoking at Iewduh, which is also a public place,” Thangkhiew said while adding that fine may be imposed against violators which can also be a source of generating additional revenue.

In his reply, Executive Member in-charge Market Hadrian Lyngdoh also shared the concern of the member and said that despite awareness on the ill effect of smoking in public places yet there is lack of cooperation from the public.

He assured to summon the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem soon and direct him to immediately address the concern.

“We will direct him (acting syiem) to also deploy enforcement personnel in the market to ensure that the law is implemented not only in Iewduh but in other markets under the council’s jurisdiction,” he said.-By Our Reporter
