SHILLONG, MAY 16: “Arise, awake and achieve!” said Meghalaya governor V Shanmuganathan, who graced as the chief guest during a programme “ A Journey Towards Skill India”, a skill development programme organised by the Directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training, Labour Department, Government of Meghalaya at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Monday.
In his speech, the governor said that in order to achieve something, one needs to have a strong mind and must be willing to take risks since risks bring success.
Lauding the Skill India and Make in India campaigns launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the governor underlined the need for possession of two basic life qualities to propel the Skill India Movement forward; namely, the inner drive and initiative in one’s mind and heart, and the adoption of the ‘dignity of labour attitude’.
“Every person has the right to choose a profession. There must be no discrimination based on occupation” said the governor while calling all who gathered to practice dignity of labour since both physical and intellectual labour command equal respect.
Acknowledging the presence of rich natural and human resources in north east India, the governor said that it is important that youths be skilled so the demand of the country can be met. He stated that the youths must be put at the forefront of economic activities so that they can contribute to nation building, also stressing that the salvation of India depends on the strength of India and that the strength of India depends on the strength of the youths.
Meanwhile Guest of Honour, Labour minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh stated that Meghalaya has the demographic benefit of having a young work force with the average age of 29 years. She also said that there is a need to turn disadvantages into dividends. The minister also batted for the need to inculcate skill agenda in the school curriculum and the need to frame career programme that meet the aspirations of the youths.
Others who spoke at the programme included MS Rao, Principal Secretary in charge Labour department who gave the welcome address and B Hajong, Director Employment & Craftsmen Training who delivered the vote of thanks.
Earlier in the programme a documentary on ‘Skill Development initiatives in Meghalaya’ was screened following which a new online application software portal ‘‘Skilled Hands’ was launched by the governor.
The ‘Skilled Hands’ portal is an innovative initiative taken by the state government and NIC to promote skills in a new way by leveraging today’s technology. This portal may be one of its kinds in the country.
The portal is meant to provide employment opportunities to the unemployed skilled individuals (Skill Hand) in the state. Skilled individuals can register themselves in the portal by visiting www.megskillhands.nic.in whereas citizens who need to employ such ‘Skill Hands’ can access the required details of Skilled Hands by logging in to the portal.-By Our Reporter
