SHILLONG, APR 21: The state government on Thursday said there is no move to implement the building bye-laws of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in Nongstoin area.

This was informed by the Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to a delegation of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) central body and Nongstoin circle during a meeting on Thursday.

“The minister has informed that the state government at the moment has no move to implement the building bye-laws in the Nongstoin area,” HYC-NC president Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh told reporters.

He said, “According to her, if there is any move the government would definitely have public consultation and take the views and opinions of all stakeholders.”

Kharsyiemlieh also informed the council has also accordingly decided to call off its proposed agitations.

Earlier this month, a public meeting convened by the HYC had decided to strongly protest against the move of the state government to implement the MUDA building bye-laws in the region.

On the other hand, HYC central body general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said actually the government cannot implement the MUDA byelaws as Nongstoin is yet to be declared as a master plan area.

He however said the government has been suggested to leave the matter of regulating building constructions to the existing town committee which was already constituted by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

The HYC has also sought the intervention of the minister to review the present building bye-laws which is considered not to be people friendly.

“There are many provisions in the bye-laws which create difficulties to the people since for a one storey building, they would have to engage architect and therefore is not reasonable,” he said.

According to him, people coming from poor economic background will never get a chance to construct houses if the present MUDA byelaws are not reviewed to make exception on the problems faced by the people.-By Our Reporter
