TURA, APR 20: National Highway Division authorities in Baghmara on Wednesday assured that part of the demands being made by several ngos in the district for repair of National Highway -62 will be fulfilled.
The assurance was given during the sit-in demonstration at the district Deputy Commissioner’s office held to pursue the issue by ngos of the region including the Garo Student Union (GSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), amongst others.
GSU southern zone president Chuba Marak said that officials assured them that repairing would be done from Siju to Karukol and from Baghmara to Sibbari, which would begin immediately.
As for the demand for the complete extension and restoration of NH-62 (double lane), they were told by officials that it would have to wait for one year more as fund from the JAICA was currently under process.
The ngos have urged the NH division authorities and the state government to fulfill the assurances and warned that it would not hesitate to launch a series of agitations if it they renege on the promise.-From Our Correspondent
