SHILLONG, APR 16: Concerned over the rising crimes against women and children in the state, leaders of several social organizations on Saturday demanded setting up of fast track courts and appointment of women judges besides conducting a comprehensive study to address the root-cause of such crimes.
According to them, it is time that the state put in place helpline number which will exclusively attend for women related issues.
Some have even hailed the Kyllang operation launched by a Khasi rebel outfit when it was at its peak against perpetrators of such crimes.
The demand was made during a public rally organized by the Joint Action Committee of Seng Kynthei, Upper Shillong held in the city to protest against the brutal rape and killing of 19-year-old girl at 4 ½ Mile near Upper Shillong on March 17.
The rally, which kick started from state central library and culminates at Malki ground was participated by hundreds of people from all walks of life including students, ngos, traditional heads and political leaders.
The placards displayed by the rallies also sent strong message to the government to ensure “Shillong is save from such heinous crimes” and that bail should not be granted to the accused Vicky Syiemlieh, who was arrested after his own mother handed him over to the police.
Speaking at the rally, Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein said that Meghalaya has witnessed increasing crimes against women and children adding unfortunately there have been huge rape and sexual harassment cases pending before the court for disposal.
Stating that there has been low conviction rate in such cases, Marwein said we have proposed to the government on the need to have fast track courts to take up trial rape cases and appoint women judges, as they are considered to be more sensitive.
According to him, the state authorities should pull up its socks towards eradicating the menace of drug abuse, which is one of the root-cause leading to such crimes.
Echoing similar views, Adviser of the Lympung Ki Seng Kynthei MPR Lyngdoh said there is a need to conduct comprehensive study by experts, which will help the state government to tackle and address the root cause in the right manner.
Asserting the need for providing a helpline number for women, Lyngdoh said, “Sex education is also equally important at the homes, schools and even religious places.”
On the other hand, headman of 4th Mile Moris Shabong urged parents to police what is inside their children’s mobile phones.
“It is seen that mobile phones have been misused where people watch dirty film and when they indulge in taking drugs, it encourages them to commit such crimes against anybody,” he said.
Condemning the rape and killing of the girl, Shabong said men are supposed to be protectors but sad to say that they have instead become enemies of mothers, sisters and daughters.-By Our Reporter
