SHILLONG, MAR 21: At least 26, 426 illegal migrants have been detected, prosecuted and deported by the Meghalaya government during the last 10 years, chief minister Mukul Sangma told the assembly on Monday.
Out of this, a total of number of 24,932 have been push back directly while 1429 have been deported and 1494 have been prosecuted from 2006 to 2015, Sangma said during his reply in the question hour.
Highlighting on steps taken to put a stop to influx, the chief minister said the state government has been making all efforts to curb infiltration from across the international border as well as of those who enter from the interstate borders.
Two committees were constituted which were headed by the Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh and top police official SK Jain to examine the benami act and reframing of tenancy bill and setting up of facilitation centres at the entry and exit points.
“Both the committees have completed the assigned tasks and submitted reports,” he said.
Sangma also said that the government has decided to create an anti-infiltration directorate as second line of defense for effectively dealing with the problem of illegal infiltration of foreign nationals.
According to him, the Meghalaya police are also sharing intelligence with the Border Security Force (BSF) on day-to-day basis. The BSF is also nodal authority of the Lead Intelligence Agency for coordination of sharing up of intelligence in the border area.
It holds a coordination meeting at two levels which include Directional Level and Functional Level and these meetings are regularly attended by the officers of Meghalaya Police, Central Para Military Forces and Central Intelligence Agency for coordination in anti-infiltration work, Sangma added.-By Our Reporter
