SHILLONG, FEB 25: Yet another Garo rebel outfit in Meghalaya – the United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA)- is all set to be disbanded by the Congress led state government at a ceremony scheduled on February 29.
With strength of over 71 cadres, the UALA had signed the Agreed Text of Settlement with the state government on December 18 last year after four round table discussions.
“The much awaited disbanding ceremony of the UALA will be organized at Dikki Bandi Stadium, Dakopgre, Tura on February 29,” West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi informed.
The surrendered cadres of the UALA will be present for the ceremonial handing over of arms and weapons and formal disbanding.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma shall be the chief guest of the programme and the programme would also be attended by home minister Roshan Warjri .
The disbanding ceremony shall take place in the presence of ministers , parliamentary secretaries , MLAs , MDCs ,church leaders , social organizations , senior citizens and others .
On December 18, 2015 the formal agreed text was signed by the state government and UALA chairman Novembirth Ch Marak alias Chiindik in Tura in the presence of the chief minister and home minister and a host of other political dignitaries in the circuit house in Tura .
“The disbanded cadres have been asked to report to the district police for verification process and the list of its cadres. Weapons also would be submitted by the UALA chairman it is learnt,” Bakshi said.
He also said that there shall be a period of psychological and spiritual counselling for the disbanded cadres after the programme and they shall be linked up with skill development programme and self-employment opportunities.
“It is hoped that the disbanding of yet another militant group shall set the stage for more reconciliation and peace talks with other insurgent groups,” he said.
The state government had successfully disbanded two Garo rebel outfits – Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) and its faction – the ANVC(B) on December 2014.
Over 700 cadres of the ANVC and ANVC(B) surrendered and deposited their arms and weapons during the disbanding ceremony held in the same venue.-By Our Reporter
