Close trading, JH-KSU

SHILLONG, FEB 23: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Jaintia Hills district unit on Monday demanded closing down of business establishments run by non-indigenous in the two districts of the region without complying with the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation Act.

At the same time, the union has also demanded the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to take action against the companies operating in East Jaintia Hills District for allegedly issuing no-objection certificates (NoC) to labourers.

The demand was made following a Right to Information (RTI) findings which revealed several anomalies in the issuing of trading licenses by the JHADC to non-tribals who are operating their business in the two districts – East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills District.

While over 1400 trading license were renewed during 2013-2014, a total of 1380 were issued in 2014-2015 by the JHADC.

Quoting the RTI findings, KSU-JHDU president Ohibait Dkhar said, “Most of the trading license applicants have failed to produce important documents like residential proof, police verification, and NOC from the headmen.”

He also said that the district council has failed to issue receipts while issuing of the trading license which is against the Act.

“The RTI further reveals that there are cases where one trading license is being shared by two persons,” he said while informing that some of NOCs have been illegally issued by a self-styled headman of Umsatat village under Narpuh Elaka, Johny Dkhar, whom the JHADC has not refused to recognized.

KSU – JHDU president informed that the JHADC CEM has assured the delegation that he would take up the matter in the upcoming meeting of the executive committee-By Our Reporter
