SHILLONG, FEB 17: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday said it would soon write to the state government for consideration of having a separate census to ensure all deserving beneficiaries are covered under the National Food Security Scheme.

The union is also contemplating to submit its suggestion to include government servants, who are the single earning head of the family, as beneficiaries of the scheme.

A delegation of the union led by its general secretary Auguster Jyrwa had also met the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, PS Dkhar to seek clarification on the alleged exclusion of deserving families from the list of beneficiaries under the NFSA.

“We would soon write to the state government to demand for a separate census while implementing the National Food Security Act in the state,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa told reporters.

According to him, this is in view of the fact that the present list of beneficiaries for implementing the NFSA was only based from the 2011 socio-economic census.

“In the absence of a separate census, there have been several anomalies and discrepancies in the implementation and distribution of the family identity card under the NFSA,” he said.

Jyrwa also added, “And many deserving families were found to be excluded from the list of beneficiaries due to the government decision to base the exercise from the 2011 census.”

When asked, the KSU leader said, “The DC has assured the delegation that the district administration will be issuing forms that will also be made available in the respective fair price shops for those deserving families which are yet to be covered under list of beneficiaries of the NFSA.”

He also informed that the DC had expressed that it would only delay the process of implementing the NFSA, if the government has to conduct for a separate census.

Meanwhile, the union has also expressed concern on the decision to exclude government servants from availing the benefits of the NFSA scheme.

“We are concern for those government servants who are single earning head of the family. There are cases where a single earning head had to feed up to 7 to 8 children,” Jyrwa said while emphasizing the need to review the decision on the government servants.

It may be mentioned the NFSA has clearly stated that the government servants are excluded from availing the benefits of the food security scheme.

On this, the KSU leader said that the union would soon sit for a meeting to decide on the suggestion to be submitted to the state government for its consideration in respect of such section of the government servants.-By Our Reporter
