‘Tarik’ for Dec 30 release

SHILLONG, DEC 21: ‘Tarik’- a three member band which also loved to be known as the ‘matrilineal punk’, is all set to release and perform their very own self-composed album for the first time at a concert in Shillong on December 30.

The album titled as the ‘Khanatang parking lot bad ki Mawbynna dewbilat’ or ‘The tales from the parking lot and foreign monoliths’, consisted of nine songs, which speaks about the various social issues.

Using the philosophy of ‘Do it yourself’, the band was founded in 2011 by renowned documentary film-maker Wanphrang K Diengdoh, who is the bass and vocalist of the band, Nikolaus Gerold, a drummer from Germany and Vahe Chorythu, the guitarist.

Terming the album as a landmark in the Khasi music scene, Diengdoh said, “It is totally inspired by the happenings in Shillong and its streets and you will find it in most of our lyrics.”

He said, “Because most of time we learnt more from the streets which you don’t get in the schools or educational institutions.”

Stating that the band believes that songs can also be seen as a source of inspiration for improving and promoting the society, he said, “We can listen and think what we can do for the betterment of the society.”

Diengdoh said, “The songs conveys to the people that they don’t need to be rich to be happy but it is all about having fun irrespective of the fact that they don’t have the resources because culture is not determined by money,” adding “People should be happy with what they have.”

When asked, the vocalist said that Mawbynna dewbilat refers to the clash between tradition and modernity where as people we are confuse of who we are and where do we fit.

Tarik- which means ‘date’ not only in Khasi language but for others- Diengdoh said, “The name of the band indicates that music is not mine and it is not yours because it is for everybody as it has no boundary. Music doesn’t care what community you are from.”

With this, he said the band is going to perform the nine songs at the Shillong release of their album to be held at Savio Hall, on December 30.

Earlier, the band has also performed their album in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Guwahati and others.

Come New Year, the band is planning to promote their album in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Calcutta, he said.-By Our Reporter
