Deadline to ultras: Release within 48 hrs

kidnappedSHILLONG, DEC 10: Ngos, traditional chiefs and residents of South West Khasi hills district on Thursday have demanded that the Garo rebels who had abducted 69-year-old Khasi coal businessman to release him unconditionally within 48 hours.

They warned failing to comply with the demand may only lead to communal tension between the two communities and the Garo militants will be held responsible. They have also asked all the Garo militant outfits operating in the region to refrain from attempting to interfere into the business of the Khasi tribal.

The deadline was taken at a public meeting organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills and the Lyngngam Indigenous Federation (LIF) held at Mawkyrwat, the district headquarters on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by thousands of people including traditional chiefs and villagers coming from different parts of the district especially the affected villages like Shahlang, Nonghyllam and Nongjri.

A 69 year old man identified as Dinarsing Syiemlieh, a coal businessman, was abducted by Garo rebel outfits from Kolagoan coal depo near Umsur in Borsora area.The incident took place on December 3, just after two Khasi labourers were abducted and later rescued by police.

“We demand that Syiemlieh be immediately release unconditionally and unharmed within 48 hours,” KSU-SWKH general secretary Forwardman Nongrem said.He said, “If the Garo rebels responsible behind the abduction fail to pay heed to our appeal, we will be compelled to come out with a more stringent
