SHILLONG, DEC 3: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today demanded the unconditional release of the two Khasi labourers, who were recently abducted for ransom by a Garo rebel outfit, within 24 hours to avoid any communal tension.
“We demand that the Garo militant outfit responsible behind the act to immediately ensure that two labourers are released unharmed within 24 hours,” KSU-South West Khasi Hills general secretary Forwardman Nongrem told reporters on Thursday.
He said, “If they (militants) fail to comply, we would be compelled to take stern decision, which will be to the extent of breaking the mutual relationship and friendship, we had all along with the Garo community.”
Johnstarly Lyngkhoi (24) of Mawthawpdah village and John Paul Kharsyiemiong (25) were abducted by a group of armed militants from Shahlang, a coal deposit rich area in South West Khasi Hills District on Sunday night.
According to police, the armed militants who are suspected to be from the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) have also demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh for the release of the two labourers.
The KSU-SWKH has also decided to call for a public meeting at Mawkyrwat, the district headquarters, on December 10, to discuss and take a tough decision against the atrocities by the Garo militants on the Khasi community.
“We urged the concern general public to attend the meeting because if the Garo militants are not releasing them, we have to be prepared to take up this issue seriously,” Nongrem said.- By Our Reporter
