TURA, NOV 11: Public rally against the Meghalaya high court order seeking centre intervention for imposition of AFSPA in Garo hills were staged at Rongjeng and Songsak in East Garo hills today. At least 2000 people attended the rally in Songsak and about 6000 people in Rongjeng.
The activists also sought a CBI or an NIA probe into the rise in militant activities in Garo hills. “There should be a thorough enquiry into why militancy has been growing in the region as this has never been done and there are too many people involved. We have never had a probe in Garo hills done by the CBI and this is something that needs to be done to pinpoint responsibility”, said Jayanta A Sangma, president of the Songsak People’s Forum at the rally at Songsak.
“AFSPA will not bring peace but create a situation where things will get out of hand and that is why we are opposing it”, said BN Marak, general secretary of the Songsak GSU regional unit.
At least five prominent citizen organisation including Garo Students Union and All A’chik Youth Federation are spearheading the protest.
A conglomeration of activists from Garo hills will be in Delhi on November 15 to meet central leadership briefing them about the law and order scenario in Garo hills.-From Our Correspondent
