SHILLONG, NOV 11: NGOs on Wednesday decided to organize a public rally – “Defending Human Rights in Garo Hills”- in Shillong on November 16 to protest against the proposed imposition of AFSPA in the region.
The anti-AFSPA public rally called by the three NGOs – Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR), Garo Students Union (GSU) and the Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO)- will start from Fire Brigade to Additional Secretariat Parking Lot.
“It is of grave concern to many that there is possible invocation of AFSPA in Meghalaya and we need to come together and make our voices heard,” TUR leader Angela Rangad said in a statement issued on Thursday.
She said that it is easy to call on AFSPA and never easy to revoke it as is the case in Manipur where it has been in operation since 1958 forcing Irom Sharmila to be on her hunger strike for the last 15 years.-By Our Reporter
