Bandh: Total in Shillong, mixed response in others

For a football crazy town, empty road during the bandh makes for a football field.

Shillong, Oct 9: Even as the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) twelve hours bandh evoked total response in East Khasi hills district, the response, however, was mixed in other four districts- East-West Khasi hills, West Jaintia hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Khasi hills. However in most of the five districts shops, business and educational institutions were closed.

The HANM twelve hours bandh got off from 5 am to pressurize the Meghalaya government to take up the issue of release one of their member who had been arrested by the Assam police in an arson case with the Assam government.

The state secretariats wore empty look as the employees did not turn up for work except for the top level officers. Even the chief minister’s secretariat was empty as the employees didn’t turn up for work and preferred to remained home.

In East Khasi hills, the HANM bandh evoked total response as state and central government offices remained closed as the staff didn’t turn out for work. Educational and financial institutions, business establishments and even private offices remained closed.

According to the East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goel the turn out in the offices are between five to ten percent. He, however, said that everything was peaceful as no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere. In Ri-Bhoi the percentage of attendance was out at twenty percent by the Ri-Bhoi deputy commissioner Akashdeep.

In West Jaintia hills the overall percentage of office goers who attended the offices was put at seventy-one percent by the deputy commissioner PS Dkhar. He, however, said that in his office the attendance was around eight-six percent.  According to him the shops were partially opened and it  remain peaceful.

In East Jaintia hills the office attendance was put at eighty percent but education institutions and business establishment remained closed. In East-West Khasi hill district, deputy commissioner Aldous Mawlong informed that in the district headquarter the attendance in office was around eighty percent but in Ranikor it was around seventy one.

In West Khasi hills district, the overall percentage of attendance in offices was put at twenty-five percent with ten percent in Mairang. Educational and business institutions remained closed.

Shillong resembled a ghost town with vehicles and people off the roads throughout the city.

Educational and financial institutions, shops and all the markets like Khyndailad (Police Bazaar), Iewduh (Bara Bazaar), Laitumkhrah, Rynjah, Polo, Jail road  markets were closed. Even small shops in different localities were mostly closed.

Despite the directive issued by the chief secretary WMS Pariat to all the five district heads and the Superintendent of Police- East, West Khasi hills, Ri-Bhoi, South-West Khasi hills, East and West Jaintia hills districts – in Shillong-the district headquarter of East Khasi hills- both the state and central government offices were empty.

The state government public transport buses are plying through the different routes in the city, but the office goers preferred to stay at home in response to the HANM bandh call. – By Our Reporter
