IB sleuth’s killer injured

TURA, NOV 9: Meghalaya police on Monday laid a trap for ASAK cadres at Williamnagar in East Garo hills injuring prime suspect in the abduction and murder of central intelligence officer Bikash Kumar Singh, whose body was found last month.

In September 27 Singh was abducted from Panda area, near Rongara in South Garo Hills. The IB official was abducted along with a trader Kamal Saha. Both Singh and Saha were killed and their bodies recovered from Bolchugre village, near Baghmara a month later on October 27.

Inspector general of police (operations), GHP Raju said “SWAT commandos of Meghalaya police laid a trap for the ASAK cadres, who came to extort money. There was an exchange of fire at Samanda in East Garo Hills in which ASAK cadre Sengbat D Shira is suspected to be injured” adding, “However, he managed to escape”.

Samanda is about 22 km from Williamnagar.

He informed that another cadre of the outfit was arrested and is being brought to Williamnagar, the district headquarter of East Garo Hills for interrogation.

“There was blood at the incident spot. Operation is on in the area to arrest Sengbat, who is a wanted criminal in kidnapping and execution of IB official”, Raju added.

Police say that Sengbath escaped to East Garo Hills after killing the IB official and is on the run.

Meghalaya director general of police Rajiv Mehta today arrived at Resubelpara to review the law and order situation in North Garo Hills in wake of a havaldar being abducted by suspected GNLA cadres.

Havaldar Khomraj Bhattarai was abducted four days ago from Darengchi village on Resu – Songsak road, while he was on his way to Resubelpara to join his duty after being on leave.

“Massive combing operation has been launched in North Garo Hills by inducting army and CoBRA to trace the whereabouts of Constable Bhattarai”, informed Raju.

GNLA has denied their involvement in the abduction of Havaldar Bhattarai. However, police strongly suspect it to be GNLA led by Philiport.-From Our Correspondent
