Bandh in Shillong evokes total response

Empty road in Shillong during the HANM bandh

Shillong, Oct 9: Early Tuesday morning Shillong resembled a ghost town with vehicles and people off the roads throughout the city as the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) twelve hours bandh got off from 5 am to pressurize the Meghalaya government to take up the issue of release of their president who had been arrested by the Assam police in an arson case with the Assam government.

Educational and financial institutions, shops and all the markets like Khyndailad (Police Bazaar), Iewduh (Bara Bazaar), Laitumkhrah, Rynjah markets were closed. Even small shops in different localities were mostly closed.

The usually choc-a-block main through-fares of the city looked empty as students who are the first one to venture out of their house remained at home. All the financial institutions were also closed as the employees did not turn up for work.

Despite the directive issued by the chief secretary WMS Pariat to all the five district heads and the Superintendent of Police- East, West Khasi hills, Ri-Bhoi, South-West Khasi hills, East and West Jaintia hills districts – in Shillong-the district headquarter of East Khasi hills- both the state and central government offices were empty.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goel said told www.ohmeghalaya.com that the attendance of employees in his own office and some other offices are negligible. He said that the state government public transport buses are plying through the different routes in the city, but the office goers preferred to stay at home in response to the HANM bandh call.

The deputy commissioners of the other four districts could not be spoke to as they did not answer the phone calls.

The state secretariats also wore empty look as the employees did not turn up for work except for the top level officers. – By Our Reporter
