SHILLONG, OCT 28: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday offered ‘free registration’ of land belonging to people residing along the inter-state border dispute with Assam.
“The executive committee has decided to give free registration of land to the people residing along the inter-state border dispute with Assam,” Executive Member in-charge of land, mines & minerals Donevan Wanlang said while replying to a motion moved by opposition HSPDP MDC Morningstar Mawsor on Wednesday.
Wanlang informed that the state government through a notification issued in 1993 had asked the need for conducting land survey and prepare records accordingly. “So far, few have come to submit their documents on the matter,” he said.
Wanlang also informed that district council would soon inform the traditional chiefs and heads within its jurisdiction to encourage their residents to register their land with the KHADC.
“Such exercise will help in resolving the age old boundary dispute with neighbouring Assam,” Wanlang said while also appealing to all the MDCs to encourage the people in their respective constituencies on the importance of land registration.
Apart from free registration, Wanlang informed that the executive committee will soon implement the decision to the extent of even providing free land survey in the border areas of the state.
Earlier, while moving the motion on the need to have all categories of land situated along the border of Meghalaya and Assam, surveyed and recorded in the district council, Mawsor said, “We need to implement the land records in order to strengthen the claims on the land.”
Supporting his views, former KHADC chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew emphasized the need to offer free land registration to people residing in the border which will proved that the lands falls within the boundary of the state.- By Our Reporter
