Shillong, Oct 6: Shillong Lajong FC Saturday kicked off its I-League campaign in style after it humbled country’s oldest club Mohun Bagan 2-0 at JN Sports Complex. It was the tourist who had better ball possession but unfit Odafa and Tolgay, who are recovering from the injury failed to capitalize the opportunity.
Lajong custodian Lalthuammawia Ralte had a busy evening under the wood work saving all the shots for which he was later awarded man of the match.
Changing over the side Lajong took control and broke the dead lock in the 58th minute of the game when substitute Boithan Haokip penetrated the
Sushil Kumar Singh’s flag kick into the net.
A minute prior to Haokip’s goal, it was Friday who had found the net but was caught off side by referee Ajit Meetei.
When the match went into the injury time Lalramluaha Hmar sealed the faith of the game 2-0 after he headed home Samuel Shadap’s volley.
Later talking to the media Bagan coach Santosh Kashyyap said they lacked in fitness level. He said, “The boys played well but concern now is to developed on their fitness” and added “Odafa and Tolgay have just recovered from injury and they need to concentrate on their fitness for a week”.
Happy Lajong coach Desmond Bulpin said “The boys played to their caliber and the result proved it”. – By Our Reporter
