Advisory on extortion issued

SHILLONG, JUNE 9: East Khasi hills police have issued advisory to public, especially businessmen, to immediately inform them if they get any extortion or demand note from the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said, “We request all concern citizens including businessmen to immediately inform Police, on any extortion bid or demand received from the HNLC so as to enable to thwart attempts of the outfit to rear its head again.”

He, however, warned that Anyone found obliging the demands of the HNLC will tantamount to aiding and abetting the outfit which will invite legal action.

The advisory was issued on the backdrop of the recent arrests of two HNLC cadres from Shillong, John Fishal Lyngdoh and Reskin Phawa and 6(six) other cadres nabbed in West Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills.

Kharkhrang said, “The arrest made revealed that the HNLC is desperate to try to start its extortion drive once again but due to the co-operation of the public the same has been foiled.”

Kharkhrang further reiterated that following the investigation of cases of extortion of the outfit after the arrest of the members, it is imperative that those who have received any call or demand note from the outfit in the recent months should report the matter to the nearest police station or to SP’s office.- By Our Reporter
