SHILLONG, June 5: East Khasi hills and East Jaintia hills district District Transport Offices (DTO) have issued show cause notices to owners of Taxi and commercial vehicles for staying away from their “lawful avocation” on May 27 when the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) called a bandh.
The show cause notices were issued based on an order from the Meghalaya High Court which had ruled that show-cause notices be issued to the owners of Taxi and commercial vehicles asking “why action against them cannot be initiated for wilfully staying away from plying their vehicles on the road.”
According to the order, the DTOs in the State Capital and Khliehriat issued the show-cause, stating they should ply on the day of the bandh despite “repeated Press Release and Communiqué of assurance issued by the State Government that adequate protection shall be provided.”
The DTOs said due to the Taxis and commercial vehicles staying away from the roads they caused “great inconvenience to the general public.” – By Our Reporter
